Jautrīte Ozola is a retired teacher who started growing roses in Sarmas in Vāne parish together with her family in the 1980s. The flower garden that she had pampered was long known by her name among flower lovers. When she retired at the age of 67, she wrote a project and received state funding to build several greenhouses, so that the family could extend the scope of their rose growing. Now Jautrīte’s son Uldis and grandson Jānis Blūms, who is a certified gardener, continue the work. In 2007 Jānis founded his own company, Jāņadārzs.

During the summer season, from May to September, flower lovers can visit the greenhouses here and buy rose flowers and plants. There are more than 150 varieties to choose from and the selection is expanded every year – it contains both hybrid tea roses and shrub roses, floribunda roses, climbing roses and ground cover roses. One of the garden’s favourites has for many years been a glorious group of floribunda roses – the Painters Collection (Roses des peintres) created by French flower breeder George Delbard – in which each variety has been named after a great artist.

The garden’s owners also provide valuable advice on rose cultivation and care.
