The Lodziņi Family Garden on the outskirts of Rauna is captivating with its sculptural plants and flowerbeds and its plentiful collections of ornamental shrubs, grasses and perennial plants.
Since Ilva and Jānis Lodziņš, the garden’s owners, moved to Rauna from Cēsis 15 years ago, the old household garden has undergone major changes. The old trees and flowerbeds have made room for new ones. Only the northern white-cedar, which has been growing here since the house was built, has remained as a tribute to previous generations. The old fruit trees and berry bushes traditionally found at farm houses have been replaced by colourful ornamental plants, and the landscaped garden has become a garden featuring collections of the owners’ favourite plant varieties.
The land around the house has expanded considerably over time and now features four large sections with a pond in the centre. The garden currently stretches over 3ha and includes 100 different types of panicled hydrangeas, 70 different mock oranges, 30 ninebarks, 40 types of birches, 220 pine trees and 35 varieties of spruces and firs. There is also no shortage of trees rare to Latvia – the American sweetgum or storax (Liquidambar styraciflua), the eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis), magnolias and the tulip tree (Liriodendron) all grow here.
Plantations of various ornamental shrubs are complemented by vibrant collections of grasses and perennial plants that bloom all summer long – baptisias, oriental poppies, yarrows, fennel flowers, garden cosmoses, phlox, heucheras, perovskias, daylilies and many more. The number of plants continues to grow.
The garden’s owners are happy to guide guests themselves and accompany their visitors. The garden is best enjoyed at a leisurely pace and you should plan to spend 1.5 to 2.5 hours here.
